hello all,
This will be slightly short as I am writing from my iPhone and am a little annoyed by it's keyboard. I am in Paris! I got in late last night, attempted to sleep, woke up early this morning, got some breakfast (croissant and espresso) and then began my search for an adapter so I can plug in my american computer and therefor charge my phone which is currently my only means of communicating with ANYONE! The French I had thought I was relearning has quickly become recognizable to me for what it is, just another American in Paris thinking he can survive off the nothing he knows. I'm staying in a hotel right now, but that ends Saturday morning, and I still haven't got a place to go. I looked today at an apartment bit it is 750 euro a month for 3 months, and it's looking pretty unlikely that I will be able to find any work any time soon....so, long story short, I've had a discouraging first day here, and it's very hard to believe it's only been one day...
I decided, since all I've got is music (and your comments and emails) to keep me company, I would keep you updated with my current top 5 songs. Here are today:
1. Band of Horses - Detlef Schremf
2. Elliott Smith - The Last Hour
3. Band of Horses - The First Song
4. Of Montreal - The Past Is A Grotesque Animal
5. Beck - Round the Bend
Apologies that this blog is not as carefully written as previous posts. It'll come back
A biento

yo!
glad to hear you've arrived and already enjoyed the french breakfast. i'm sure your French will go fine, it's not necessarily the quantity that you know, but more so your comfort with it, so it's a good sign you're already feeling good about the language. man, apartments must be expensive over there (what is that amount, over a grand per month??). don't give up, keep up the struggle (hopefully you brought your revolutionary cap, so you can embody the struggle! :)). keep us updated, and will concentrate good vibes your way.
abraços,
oh yeah, you mean to say "i don't know what i was thinking" (or thought) with the title, no?
thank you for finally posting. I've been compulsively checking your blog about 4 times a day since Tuesday. I guess it's only been about 48 hours since you left. feels like so much longer than that though. Band of Horses has been running through my head non-stop. it's bitter-sweet. I really hope things start getting easier for you. break-a-leg.
Hi Nate!
I was happy to see you made it over there all safe and sound. I have also been keeping an eye out for when you posted next, you are now on my google homepage ^_^ I wish I had the nerve to just up and move like that! I hope everything goes well in Paris. I'll be thinking about you.

Nathaniel,
I have four words for you...
Vous pouvez le faire!
I don't if that's how they'd actually say "You can do it!" in France, but that's what the Google translator told me.
Will you do me a favor? Do me a favor. Ask a beautiful French person how you say "You can do it!" in French. I think you would say, "Comment dit-ton 'You can do it!'"
Then I want you to say these four words whenever you have a chance. Lets say you see a woman solving a crossword. Do they do crossword in Paris? Soduku maybe? Use it as an ice breaker... "Vous pouvez le faire." If she doesn't speak any English, say it again and walk away. It'll be funny. But if she does speak some English... JACKPOT. Who knows maybe you'll find a roof for a few nights. Stranger things have happened...
Vous pouvez le faire!

There are easier ways to get a room for the night, did you bring a gun, a suit, and cologne? If so, spray the suit with the cologne till its well covered then shoot at it till it catches fire, french girls love fire and the sound of a gun going off.
i feel bad that i didn't get you a drink or a gift before you left. not that i didn't think of what a good gift would be. but i couldn't think of one. i don't want to give you anything else, i want you to be in paris with very few things, it's the only way you'll accomplish what you're over there for. all i can say, for tonight, is that i hope you find a way to live that makes you happy. i know it's out there, or rather, that it's inside you somewhere, waiting to come back out. you must be having a shit load of fun, even if it is strugglin' and confusin'. i wish you the best.
Do it!
Ben
